On November 12, 2015, I travelled to Brooklands to sketch as much of the interior of the McEvoy Shed as I could in a day. Shown is a completed section of what will be an almost 360 degree sketch of the inside of this historic shed, as it was when I visited on that windy day.</div>

in fine fettle. As well as maintaining the current inventory of museum motorcycles, the team also restore and resurrect historic machines. Over the last few years the main focus for Ian McCaw and his happy band has been a full restoration of the Doug Earle Cotton-JAP. This intriguing motorcycle was built by Earle in the 1990s as a replica of a 1930s Outer Circuit racer, complete with sidecar. Doug aced Zeniths at Brooklands in 1938 and so the Cotton-JAP was built by one of the few that had experienced the legendary banked track. The Cotton frame is the oldest component dating from 1928 – it’s believed the frame was used for grass track racing after the war. The JAP engine, seen on the work bench in the illustration, is a speedway unit dating from 1938. At the time of my visit, the frame was away being painted and so only the odd part of the motorcycle was to be seen around the shed, for instance the gearbox on top of the shelving unit, leaving hints of the team’s activity. </div>

The shed is full of tools and other period ephemera. Nothing has survived from McEvoy’s day but the team has done a good job of keeping it looking period, while still using it as a workshop. Spending time in the shed gave me a unique insight into how the space is used by the volunteers and run as a period motorcycle workshop. However, I couldn’t help but wonder what had happened at the time Michael McEvoy was resident, so after my visit I spent some time in the history books and spoke to everyone I thought might know something about McEvoy. Thank you to those people that helped me with this article, especially Peter Lancaster. This has been another great experience of the minefield of historical research.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Michael Ambrose McEvoy was an Etonian who got a taste for motorcycle sport while still at Eton as a member of the Public Schools’ Motor Cycling Club. At the age of 16, he was hillclimbing on a 350cc Douglas. By 1922 McEvoy was competing in Midlands events and was a class winner, riding against high calibre riders such as George Brough and George Dance, ace Sunbeam tuner. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
After Eton, McEvoy went on to work as an engineer at the Rolls-Royce factory in his local city of Derby, instead of choosing the more traditional route of going on to Cambridge or Oxford University. During his spell at Rolls-Royce, he worked on a motorcycle frame design in his spare time. The frame used a full cradle to hold a V-twin engine, with a single top tube and twin down tubes running from the headstock to the rear wheel axle. An additional third tube ran from the headstock to the engine plates. This innovative design made the frame very rigid and was quite different to the engine plates used by many manufacturers of the day. In 1924, while still at Rolls-Royce, the first McEvoy motorcycle appeared under the manufacturer name of LF Ellis. In an article in the Derby Daily Express, “Mr Ellis made it clear that Mr McEvoy is not concerned in business and he is engaged in the automotive industry in Derby… McEvoy, he, said, simply rode his own machine and did all the racing.”</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
And that he did. McEvoy rode his McEvoy-Anzani at a number of events during 1924, including a few at Brooklands . One race of note was on July 19 at Brooklands, where the gear lever broke while pulling away from the start. For the remainder of the race, McEvoy had to hold the gear in top with one hand and steer with the other, weaving down the straights at 100mph!</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
In 1925, McEvoy left Rolls-Royce to concentrate on his own marque. In the same year, McEvoy managed to persuade George Patchett to leave Brough Superior to become competition manager at McEvoy. Whether it was the potential pay rise for the change in position or the chance to work with an engineer of McEvoy’s calibre, who knows. Either way, McEvoy must have been very persuasive as the decision to move from an established maker such as Brough Superior would have been a tough decision.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
The debutante motorcycle for McEvoy’s 1925 range was a 500cc JAP engined McEvoy Special. The engines were quoted as being “hand picked and tuned by GW Patchett” and claimed to be good for 100mph in production trim. The racing team of McEvoy and Patchett was a great match and new ground was about to be broken with Brooklands, as their new racing home. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
McEvoy moved into the shed at Brooklands in 1926. During the short residency, the team made pioneering steps, pursuing McEvoy’s lifelong obsession of working with superchargers. The main machine the duo worked on was a 980cc JAP fitted with a Roots-type supercharger. Coupling a supercharger to a V-twin was a British first, so McEvoy had to work from his own engineering experience in order to see what would work. The first configuration McEvoy settled on had the blower mounted just behind the timing case, driven by a series of gears. The blower then fed into a two litre reservoir and then on to two Binks carburettors. He soon found that this configuration would not work as the supercharger caused knock on effects on the jetting of the carburettor and the timing of the engine. To solve the problem McEvoy found that he could swap the order round so that the mixture would pass through the carburettor first and then onto the supercharger, which in turn fed straight to the inlets of the V-twin barrels. This configuration worked rather well, so much so that it was used by the likes of Baragwanath, Noel Pope, and Alf Hagon in their supercharged motorcycles and is still used to this day.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Brooklands was an ideal home and testing ground for the supercharged machine but inorder to see what the motorcycle was truly capable of, the team had to travel to more suitable testing grounds. McEvoy and Patchett worked at Brooklands to prepare the supercharged 980cc machine for the trip to Oostmalle in Belgium. Here, there was a suitable road that could be closed to the public in order to attempt speed records. On March 14, 1926, the McEvoy team achieved mile and kilometre Belgian records at 115mph, but sadly no world records. Even though they didn’t achieve world records this was still a major achievement, due to the experimental nature of the machine. Working with a totally new configuration, the engineering and ingenuity employed to achieve this must be given high praise indeed. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
The following Saturday (March 20) the McEvoy team was back on home ground racing the supercharged machine at Brooklands, where Patchett came third. One month later, on April 10, the McEvoy team achieved first and second places at Brooklands, showing that the machine was improving with each event. During this time, the team was gearing up to achieve speed records, again at Southport Sands. On Saturday, April 17, Patchett rode the 980cc McEvoy, winning the un-limited class with a record motorcycle speed for Southport Sands of 116.5mph. On the same day the McEvoy team also won the 500cc Sidecar and 500cc Solo races, proving that with the tuning expertise of Michael McEvoy and the expert riding of George Patchett, consistent results were possible.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
McEvoy continued to push its motorcycles further throughout 1926. The 28th September meeting at Brooklands was particularly successful as the McEvoy team achieved a 73.58mph standing km and 79.93mph on a standing mile using the sidecar outfit. They also achieved a 85.35mph standing km in the solo class. Racing at Brooklands continued into 1927 where Patchett gained his Gold medal on Wednesday April 20, during the five lap solo 1000cc scratch race. Patchett averaged 100.82mph and achieved a maximum speed of 106.19mph. By this time, McEvoy was using the longer stroke 996cc </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
After this financial blow, McEvoy seems to venture more into the sport of speedway, not only as another market to demonstrate his innovative motorcycles, but to continue his racing. McEvoy developed Rudge and Blackburne powered Dirt Track bikes with very low slung motors, not unlike the speedway motorcycles of today. Michael rode against the likes of Sprouts Elder, one of the legendary riders of the day. McEvoy’s speedway bikes were just as innovative as his road racing motorcycles, showing his natural engineering abilities always pushed the boundaries of any discipline he ventured into.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Alongside motorcycle sport, McEvoy continued to develop and sell machines for a range of markets, using single and twin cylinder engines. At the 1928 Olympia show, McEvoy displayed a range of motorcycles, including a 987cc ohc straight four and a 350cc ohc single The McEvoy dirt bike was also included in the line-up, which shows that the firm was taking the speedway market seriously. Due to lack of backing and the financial climate, production for McEvoy motorcycles slowed to a halt in 1929.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Only a handful of McEvoy motorcycles survive and it’s a great shame that due to a brief production period and unfortunate circumstances, McEvoy hasn’t been remembered quite as well as he deserves within the world of motorcycles. His early experiments in supercharging motorcycles are to be highly commended due to their pioneering nature. It is even briefly mentioned in The Motor Cycle, March 11, 1926 that, “The McEvoy firm has a great faith in the future of the supercharger, first of all for racing, and later for ordinary touring machines, and is carrying out a series of experiments to determine the possibility of employing an increased charge in standard engines.” We will never know what would have happened if McEvoy had continued with its innovative machines, but hope that the machines and their creator are remembered and inspire current motorcycle engineers to continually push their own boundaries.</div>

This year I was only in attendance for one day and so I decided to concentrate on motorcycles. I soon realised that there were too many great machines to sketch in ink on the day and so I stuck with pencil sketches that were inked at leisure in the studio.<br />
<br />
The last 2 machines seen below were both on the <a href="http://www.london-motorcycle-museum.org/">London Motorcycle Museum</a> stand. I urge you to visit this museum and please support this invaluable collection of machines, which exists in a city that is increasingly expensive for endeavours such as this.<br />

The drive was well worth it as the pits were packed full of great examples of vintage, classic and modern sprint bikes. John Hobbs was in attendance with 3 machines including the legendary Hobbit and Olympus, historic machines from the golden age of drag racing in the UK.<br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">For the first time since 1939 the <a href="http://www.systonparkspeedtrials.com/">Syston Speed Trials</a> were held at Syston Park near Grantham Lincolnshire. The event was very low key and benefited from this as it provided a very relaxed and informal atmosphere, concentrating on enjoying motor sport on this historic hill climb. I concentrated on sketching motorcycles but there was a great variety of 4 wheeled entrants in the form of vintage sports cars, Edwardian race cars and hill climb specials. Hopefully this event will become an annual affair that sticks to the high quality of entrants and limited public tickets as it certainly made for a refreezing change to more heavily attended events which have their own merits.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">T<span style="font-size: small;">he Banbury Run is an event </span>ruin<span style="font-size: small;"> by the <a href="http://www.vmcc.net/">VMCC</a> at which I’m always overwhelmed with the variety of machinery, often happy to see that a machine I missed in previous years has returned and so I get a second chance.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">Like the Pioneer Run, ‘Banbury’ involves lots of pencils sketching in order to get the details into the sketchbook before the riders start leaving at 10am.</span></div>
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">The ink bits are then done in the less hectic environment of the studio using photographic reference. Due to the ebb and flow of occasions like these, I’m sometimes unable to obtain information from the riders, as they are often preoccupied with making sure their machine is ready for the run or they are socialising away from their vehicle. In cases like this, I have then researched the marque or model afterwards in order to give you an historic insight into the machine.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I have seen this Cedos at a few Banbury Runs and was happy to see it again, and decided to get it in the sketchbook. I quite enjoyed the plethora of modern attachments to aid navigation on the handlebars – I gather the rider was well prepared for their route.</span></span></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Cedos motorcycles were produced for a decade between 1919 and 1929. This exotic sounding marque is in fact a combination of the founding brothers’ names, CEdric and OScar Hanwell. Mainly producing two-stroke machines in ladies and gents variations – both of which, incidentally, could be seen at this year’s Banbury Run – they started with a 211cc two-stroke with chain-driven two-speed gearbox and final belt drive. There was no kick start and so the models had to be push started.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">After liquidation in 1922-23, the company was restructured and the subsequent machines used various engines from Blackburne to JAP and ended up using Villers units.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Like many businesses, the stock market crash of 1929 bought Cedos down with it and production came to an end. Around 4000 machines were built during their 10 year run and it is reckoned less than a dozen remain.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Chris and Jill Streather purchased the then solo machine a long while ago from a well respected Norton enthusiast ‘Up North’ when looking for some parts for another restoration he was helping them with. They were so taken with the machine it came back too. The ‘44’ was used as a solo at several Banbury Runs, while a suitable chair to accommodate the couple so they could do the run together, was looked for.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The sidecar they found is mounted on the later genuine Norton G chassis. The chair has been modified to be more in keeping with the era of the 44 and the originality of the sidecar body. The sidecar not only meant Jill could have some comfort, but; “As the 44 is very high, reaching the kick-start on the stand is virtually impossible, and off the stand starting was a bit of a balancing act, so a chair was just the job.” There are a few non-original parts on the 44 but the previous owner built it to be reliable machine, which Chris and Jill continue to enjoy.</span></span></div>

<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: 'Times New Roman';">The first of two Swiss-owned machines that caught my eye at Banbury was this rather sporty looking Motosacoche V-twin. The marque name has it’s origins in its 1900 auxiliary engine which was sold in its own subframe and was to be installed in a conventional bicycle. The subframe made the engine look as if it was in a bag, hence the name Motosacoche, which translates as ‘engine in a bag.’</span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: 'Times New Roman';">From these humble beginnings, the factory went on to provide engines for many British and continental manufacturers including Royal Enfield and Monet Gyon. Motosacoche also had racing success in the 1920s, winning the Bol d’Or 24 hour event outside Paris in 1922, with a 500cc Motosacoche covering 1206kms within the 24 hours.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><br /></span></div>
</span><div style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #252525; font-family: 'Times New Roman';">Englishman Dougal Marchant designed and built ohc Motosacoches on which Wal Handley won the 350cc and 500cc European championships in 1928. The famous Bert Le Vack became a works rider, chief designer and tuner for Motosacoche in the late 1920s. Unfortunately, Le Vack was killed whilst testing one of the A50 machines on public roads close to the factory on September 17, 1931. It was by this time that Norton was dominating racing, and the Motosacoche started to lose business, eventually giving up on motorcycles by 1956.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The second Swiss entry, parked next to the Motosacoche, was this well built Swedish-made Husqvana. Spending the time I had sketching this machine, I really appreciated the finer details of a model so well built it never made the company money, as it sold for less than it cost to build.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">This twin model was introduced in the early 1920s, possibly in response to the popularity of American twins in Sweden at the time. This design seems to be very influenced by the Indian Scout 101. With Bosch magdyno powering the lighting and a twp-way rear brake with an outer band and inner shoes, operated by hand and foot levers, this really was a higher end machine of the period. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">On seeing the Busy Bee in the paddock, I was thrilled, but instantly questioned; “Is this vintage or a modern, recent build, using period parts?”</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I soon stopped questioning and sat down to capture it in my sketchbook, ignoring my internal snobbery. While sketching it, I soon met the owner who confirmed this was ‘vintage’ – built, in fact, in 1919 by Joseph A. Mills of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Mr Mills built the machine in his spare time with the prime objective of travelling with more protection than afforded during standard motorcycling. Originally fitted with an air cooled Stagg 5hp single cylinder engine, the one lunger was replaced in 1928 with a 1924 AJS 6hp 799cc V-twin, mounted as if in a motorcycle. The Busy Bee went through various modifications to the bodywork before arriving at its current configuration.</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 12pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">According to The Light Car and Cyclecar article of October 20, 1922; “The direct steering, connected by self-adjusting ball joints, is so successful that the monocar may be driven ‘hands off’ for considerable distances.”</span></span></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 14px; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 14px;">
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">How much of the 100,000 miles Mr Mills covered by 1956 were done in this manner is anyone’s guess! The story behind this amazing survivor conjured up visions of Mr Mills travelling the length and breadth of Nottinghamshire enjoying a machine of his own creation with a smile of contentment.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';"><br /></span></span></div>

<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">After his death, the monocar was sold to a motorcycle dealership Messrs Frank Inger & Sons where it was never used and I assume displayed as a curiosity. Since then the car has gone through several owners and has gone mostly unused. One rumour is that it may have been used in the Madresfield Speed Trials in the late circa 1986 when owned by Chris Gordon. The car was restored by Harry Reginald Holland after he bought it in December 1987. The current owners were running it in the Banbury Run as a test run before (fingers crossed) taking it out to the French incarnation of the Festival of Slowth, a wonderful event involving all things slow, mostly cyclecars. I have since been informed that the Busy Bee performed well at both Banbury and in France, and even made it up the hill at Chateau Impney ‘…though not when anyone was looking.’ I do hope this great machine enjoys more of the open road with its new owner, as was intended by Mr Mills.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I was quite taken by this beautifully simple Norton custom built by Jesse Bassett of Gasbox Customs. Jesse’s first job in the custom world was sweeping the floor at a shop at the age of 10.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The genesis of this build was born out of a trip out to a large barn an hour outside of Cleveland in search of Norton Commando parts. The barn was full of British bike parts and the owner said there was an old Dominator engine in among the piles of parts – two hours later, Jesse had dug the engine out. Two years later, while talking through a commissioned build with an Australian customer, Jesse remembered the Dominator engine. The mention was met with much enthusiasm, so Jesse started the process of a two year build, which was completed in 2015.</span></span></div>

<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 14px; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The frame is custom built to suit the rider and was styled around the Norton ES2. The girder forks were made from scratch, influenced by a Webb design. The engine has been tuned, by taking the 500cc Dominator up to 600cc with different barrels and crank, parts being sourced through the Norton Owners club here in the UK. Further tuning was done by installing larger valves and cleaning up the ports, plus the cam was reground to a more performance-oriented profile. For show, the engine cases were polished and the cast iron head and cylinders were nickel plated.</span></span></div>

<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The main aspects of this build I think work are the simple choices and attention to small details that make this a pure motorcycle with just the right balance of original and custom made elements. Original Norton fuel and oil filler caps are used on the custom tanks, a six volt lighting system and a single Smiths speedo all help to make this a classic motorcycle with a modern twist. The Norton has been built to be ridden, but shares the show aspects of the Venom such as nickel plating to make elements really stand out.</span></span></div>

Bought in 1990 for £90 this Suzuki GT250 X7 was run as a road racer and then began sprinting in 1997. At that time it was still fairly original and over time the machine has been slowly tweaked and altered to become more competitive within the sport of sprinting. The day before I visited Weston Zoyland Tonmy had achieved a course record for it's class of 10.79 seconds for the quarter mile and hitting 119mph.</div>

I hope this bike and John do make it out to the salt flats within the next few years, so he can achieve one of his life goals, though in the meantime he seems happy sprinting here in the UK.</span></span></div>

In May I was thrilled to be part of the Revolution show in Hastings. In this show <a href="http://www.revoltmotorcycles.com/">Revolt Motorcycles</a> showcased a great mix of custom and classic motorcycles alongside a whole gallery of motorcycle based art. The location was the Observer building in Hastings, the old print works for the local newspaper.</div>

<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Buchet started life as just an engine. Jake Robbins, famed for his girder fork work, was commissioned to create the rest. Jake managed to track down the only other known Buchet of this year and model, which was in Australia. The owner kindly traced round the frame by laying it down on a large sheet of paper and drawing round it. Measurements were taken of the tube widths and lug work so that Jake could make a replica frame and forks. Jake has done an amazing job, fabricating all the various aspect of this veteran machine.</span></span></div>

<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">It is unusual to see early machines like this at what is mainly a custom show. The variety of machines on show was great, as it provided a great insight into what people are building, be it modern customs or replicas such as this. You could argue that this is a custom motorcycle by the fact it has all been hand made in the same way a good custom motorcycle is, but I think replica is more appropriate as Jake has done such a great job creating a period machine. </span></span></div>

<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">One item of note is the fact that the engine is mounted very low with not much ground clearance. This may be because the original was built as a cycle pacer, as a roadster would surely have had more ground clearance, due to the roads being rather bumpy back then…</span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was my favourite custom of the show as it used the combined talent of <a href="http://www.kingdomofkicks.co.uk/">Kingdom of Kicks</a> and the abstract talent of <a href="http://willbarras.tumblr.com/">Will Barras</a>. The bike was assembled days before the show, hence some unfinished bits like a missing brake line etc. this didn't matter as it stood out as a full on motorcycle that plays on the traditions of choppers whilst doing it's own thing.</div>

It was the engine that attracted me to this Harris racer turned custom. The turbo on the engine was original to the race machine that has now been changed into a custom, which apparently won't be ridden which is a shame, as at the heart of this custom is a real race machine that could easily be raced on a track or even sprinted to do what was originally intend by Harris.</div>

<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Known as ‘Thor,’ a name given by its later owner Ernie Woods, this was the second 1000cc machine built in the 1950s by the former Brooklands competitor Francis Williams. Williams built this in 1959 to compete for the outright record at the Brighton Speed Trials. Based around a Norton Featherbed frame, this sprinter was built on the knowledge gained from building its predecessor in 1955.</span></span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The engine is a JAP V-twin using Alfin alloy cylinder barrels topped by Speedway JAP cast-iron cylinder heads. Running on methanol, the engine was reputed to produce 100 horsepower. When Williams sold on his remaining sprinters to Ernie Woods around 1960, Ernie continued to campaign Thor successfully at sprints and hill climbs, achieving 186mph on the Caragrohane Straight in Northern Island. Woods also broke the Ramsey Sprint record set by George Brown on Super Nero.</span></span></div>
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Thor is one of the few sprinters that has remained intact. Luckily after it failed to sell at the Woods’ family auction in 1996, it was bought by a sympathetic owner who has kept it running, stopping it from being broken for its valuable race parts, which many of these machines do. Sold by Bonhams, I hope the new owner is just as sympathetic to its history and that Thor gets to bring its thunder to sprints in the coming years.</span></span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">A while back I was asked by Mike Griffiths of the Rudge Enthusiasts club to sketch his Rudge Rapid. I finally sat down in front of the machine last April. </span></span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Originally owned by John Cansdale of Surrey from 1960-89, the machine was ridden in worse than barn find condition, though this didn’t happen often due to its bad state. It was then bought by Martin Toft, who spent over five years restoring it to a better than factory condition. In 1995 it won Autoglym Bike of the show at the Birmingham NEC. Later that year John Cansdale’s wife bought it back as a surprise for John. From then on, the Rapid was shown a lot in Rudge Enthusiast Club displays, and this is where Mike came to know John and the machine. John died around eight years ago, and the Rapid passed to his son, who after six months decided to move it on. Mike was offered first refusal, as John knew he was keen on it, though at the time Mike had a fair few machines and so he didn’t take up the offer. It then went to Milton Keynes. After a while Mike, saw the machine for sale and so decided to buy it. I love the fact that it has now come back to a genuine enthusiast and friend of the original owner, showing how motorcycle clubs can keep relationships and histories going through continued ownership.</span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'times new roman'; font-size: 16px;">(ink sketch with gouache)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 14px;">
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Whilst sketching Mike’s Rudge, I was asked by a member of the Velocette Club to sketch this very special machine. This Velocette was the first production Venom (engine No. VM1001) and the show bike from the 1955 Earls Court Motorcycle Show. One very individual aspect of the Venom was its beige paint job, somewhat controversial as Velocettes were predominately black. After the show, it was sent to one of the top Velocette dealers, L Stevens of Shepherds Bush, from where it was sold to Dennis Bradbury in January 1956. Two years later it was involved in an accident where the frame was bent. Keith Gooding took on the motorcycle and during the restoration he painted it black.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 14px;">
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">For the next 20 years it was used for both commuting and weekend riding by Mr Gooding. In 1981, Les Froad restored it back to its original colour, which is how it is now. The next owners were a small consortium of Velocette Owners Club members – the colour made this purchase a controversial one. Many in the club felt it should be black, but luckily it has stayed Dove Grey Beige. Velocette must have chosen this colour to make it stand out at the 1955 show and it certainly has been a talking point since. A brave decision on behalf of the maker, but seeing that this was the first of what was to become an iconic machine it seems right to me that the colour remains as is, as this is an integral part of its history. The bike differs from the production models as certain extra parts were chromium plated rather than painted and the crankcases were highly polished.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><br /></span></span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-size: 14px;">
</span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-size: 14px;">
</span></div>
<div>
<div style="font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal;">
<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Venom was important in Velocette history as it was the company’s range leader and successfully campaigned in production racing, competing in the Thruxton 500 mile race, where Velocette was very successful. It's been a few years since I've attended the <a href="https://www.prescottbikefestival.co.uk/">Prescott Bike festival</a> and on returning to the beautiful location of Prescott I remembered what a great place the paddock is to sketch in. </div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">This particular machine was bought by father and son team Zac and Sam Grief in 2013. They were building a Kawasaki AR50 after seeing a 50cc racer at the Telford show earlier in the year but when this complete Kreidler came up for sale, they changed their plans. The Kreidler was one of the 50cc racers of choice in the 1970s due to the success of the Kreidler and Van Veen factory racers. The Kreidler, although in poor shape, was a great basis for their racer. This became their summer project and entered its first race at Darley Moor in September. Sam was only 14 at the time and worked hard to ride a bike that was unfortunately plagued with problems throughout the meeting. So that winter was spent making lots of modifications, ready to compete in 2014. A 9bhp but reliable engine earned them third place in the championship that year and several wins including the local circuit of Darley Moor, the scene of the previous year’s problematic first race, so a great moment for the father son team. </span></span></div>

<div style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">More work that winter on the engine yielded 13bhp from the little air-cooled piston port 50cc machine, with a 20bhp liquid cooled disc valve engine also in build. The </span></span>winter’s work paid off and 2015 continued to be good for the Griefs as they won all 22 races they finished, with two falls and one machine failure. Lap records were taken at all four circuits they raced at and even won in the 250cc class outright at Tonfanau, showing power to weight really matters.</div>

After last years trip to <a href="http://www.bespoked.cc/">Bespoke</a> in Bristol I was keen to attend again and sketch some more handmade bicycles. Being a local show I decided my trusty 1954 Freddie Grub road bicycle into town, however on arrival I soon realised I had my sketchbook but no pens! I quickly went to my favourite art supplies store <a href="http://www.bristolfineart.co.uk/">Bristol Fine Art</a> and bought some Faber Castel Pitt pens and a rather nice clutch pencil called a Koh-I-Noor to play with. Here's the results...</div>

My main revelation of the show was finding out about an event that was held last year called the <a href="http://www.hackbikederby.com/">Hack Bike Derby</a> and event put together by Andrew Denham from <a href="http://www.thebicycleacademy.org/">The Bicycle Academy</a>. The event was an invitational for a group of 17 bicycle makers were set the challenge to build a bike in the spirit of the pre mountain bike klunkers with a budget of no more than £300. The bikes also had to be fitted with the same tyres to further level the playing field. </div>

On the 7th April I dropped off some artwork and prints to the <a href="http://thebikeshed.cc/">Bike Shed</a> venue in Hoxton, London a great place to get your dose of custom motorcycle culture or just a decent drink and a bite to eat. Whilst I was there I got a little bit of sketchbook time in before my parking ran out...</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">After sketching more and more scooters over the last few months I decided to travel to Coventry for the <a href="http://www.vmsc.co.uk/">Vintage Motor Scooter Club</a> Extravaganza. It turned out to be a great show with a range of machines from classic Lambrettas and Vespas through more obscure models onto full on customs. There were a few machines that I would have loved to sketch but unfortunately couldn't get a good point to sketch them from, as it got really busy. I did however get to sketch some great machines and here are the results of my days sketching.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I first saw one of these Maico scooters at the NEC show last year and was impressed with the styling and solid look to them. This scooter for the time was expensive but really well engineered. It was very well received in the UK, so much so that when Maico stopped making the Maicoletta in 1966 the UK importer built more from the spare parts they had left up until late 1967. With front and rear suspension and a 4 speed gear box with a heal toe change on the floor this well built large scooter was a luxury machine. With this came a high price and so they were only produced for 11 years. With a young demographic that came with scooters there was a limited amount of customers and so they couldn't compete with the Italian rivals.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Designed by Edward Turner, the general manager and chief designer at Triumph this scooter was also sold under the Triumph mark as the Triumph Tigress. A prototype of the 250cc BSA Sunbeam was first shown at the 1958 Earls Court Cycle and Motor Cycle Show. The 2 stroke engine was a developed from the BSA Bantam engine, where the 4 stroke was an entirely new parallel-twin which was gear driven to the gearbox. Final drive was by chain in an enclosed oil bath.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This particular Sunbeam was restored between 1983 and 1986. The scooter has been regularly used for holidays club runs and displays since. Only modification has been an electronic charging regulator.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been wanting to sketch a Mod scooter for a while and this was a perfect choice for a sketch. It's an exact replica of Stings scooter from the film Quadrophenia. The owner has spent a long time sourcing all the parts to get it right. Apparently one of the hardest parts to find was the amber lamps on the front. Prop makers for the film would have stuck what they could find at the time on the scooters to get them to look right.</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I’m always incredibly spoilt for choice at the <a href="http://www.sunbeam-mcc.co.uk/">Sunbeam MCC</a>’s Pioneer Run as there are so many amazing veteran machines in attendance. I sketch in pencil at the finish line and ink them when I’m back in the studio, as there are only a few hours to gather as many examples as possible in the sketchbook, before the weary travellers decide to go home. Due to the nature of the event I rarely get to speak to the owners as they are normally refreshing themselves (with tea, chips and ice-cream!) after the ride from Tattenham Corner. Consequently, much of the information contained below has been obtained after the event.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I had never seen this motorcycle mark before, and I’m unlikely to see another. Made by the White & Poppe motor company, this is an early example of the motorcycles made by this firm between 1902 and 1914. It is single speed, with no clutch, like many of these veteran machines. This particular motorcycle has completed the Pioneer Run for the past 20 years with its current owner. It was one of the first machines to arrive and so it obviously is quite a reliable and quick machine. The current owner has had custody for over 20 years and the previous keeper had it for four decades. I hope the next owner (as it is currently for sale) will ride it with as much enthusiasm and respect as its previous custodians. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The Pioneer Run is always a good place to spot ladies models, which are always aesthetically intriguing as they are designed primarily with the impracticalities of ladies’ skirts in mind. Sammy Miller stopped to say hello whilst I sketched the Kerry and mentioned that around 75 manufacturers were producing ladies models during this period. After the war the production of the ladies model declined, perhaps due to the fact it was then more acceptable for women to wear trousers in practical situations. This Kerry was the first of two ladies models I sketched this year, with this one ridden by Vincent Belgraver, from Holland. He had restored this example fairly extensively, trying to retain as much of the original as possible over a period of time, and has completed quite a few Pioneer Run since.</span></span></div>

<h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">I saw this remarkable machine at 2015’s Pioneer Run and was intrigued by the various wooden boxes and wires. I wondered whether it used period electrics as it certainly looked the part. Luckily, this year as I finished sketching the G. Valliere, the owner, Andrew Heaps, introduced himself and I managed to find out more.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The engine is an early clip on two-stoke which the owner, a keen veteran bicycle collector, came upon by chance and immediately snapped it up as his expert eye told him it was intended for a very early motorcycle. With no documentation and little historical information on these engines, it took a while to work out how to get it working reliably. The wiring is actually quite simple, using a period coil (c. 1902) to the rear of the frame and a modern battery in the adjacent box. The spark is timed by the contact breaker on the timing side. A more modern condenser is to be found in one of the foremost boxes, completing the puzzle. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The second ladies model of the day was this Hobart. I was rather taken with the arrangement of the tank and mounted controls. Hobart Bird & Co.,Wolverhampton, started out as many did as a bicycle manufacturer in 1892. The company’s first venture into motorcycles in 1901 was an autocycle with an inclined engine which was widely used and became known as the Handy Hobart. Manufacture of the Handy continued, alongside another model with a vertical engine, which was introduced in 1903, until 1906, when manufacture stopped and Hobart became a supplier.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">In 1910 the firm returned to motorcycle manufacture with machines such as this ladies model and made motorcycles into the early 1920s, with a couple of name changes to McKenzie Hobart in 1922 and Hobart-Acme in 1924. After this, Hobart ceased to appear as a motorcycle marque, though did continue to supply its own engine to other firms for several years afterwards.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">My final sketch of the weekend was this heavy looking Matchless combination, which appears more than capable of touring the country, and then some. I love the utilitarian look, with its substantial kick start, electric lighting and sprocket driven speedometer. This model 8B was the predecessor to the Model H which was offered as a combination only and was produced until 1927. The restoration of this particular combination was undertaken by apprentices at the Norton Villiers Plumstead factory in the 1960s. Not a bad pedigree seeing that the Plumstead factory has its roots in the Matchless brand.</span></span></div>

My first show at the Birmingham NEC this year was the <a href="http://www.necrestorationshow.com/">Practical Classics Restoration Show</a>. I have attended this once before and I'm always fascinated by what is now considered a classic as some of the cars on display were cars that I know from my childhood. Anyway enough of that here's some sketches and photos....</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My first sketch of the show was this Simca Arnode, it was tucked away in a corner and was a great subject. These were produced between 1951 and 1963 and a total of 159,418 were built. When talking to the owner I found that not many of these exist especially in this country. The Simca was a simple and practical car with a simple dash and rubber matts, when it's competitors in the UK were providing walnut dashes and carpets. The Simca still had it's own quirks as most french cars do, the seats fold back to horizontal providing a double bed and the fuel cap is hidden behind one of the rear light units!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There is something about Frisky microcars that is wrong and right at the same time, having unconventional proportions coupled with some 50s styling with the rear tail fins for me is something that always excites me about these small modes of transport. Only 15 Super Sports survive today and the owner of this example also owns the prototype. These micro cars were made by Meadows in Wolverhampton and powered by a 325cc Twin Villiers engine. This car was a wreck when found, as many of them are due to the fact that these were totally functional, cheap forms of transport. Fully restored by the current owner this is now like new and used fairly regularly.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Restoration of this roadster was done by the current owner who completed the work in 2002. The Dolomite took 5 years to restore, 18 months of which was spent restoring the rotted ash coachwork and 2 years on the interior and upholstery. The paintwork was sprayed on the driveway would you believe! It was the waterfall grill that got my attention on this fabulous roadster, the long nature of these cars is always a challenge and I had a great time sketching it.</div>

After sketching the Dolomite I was asked to sketch this earlier 1935 Gloria Vitesse. There are some great lines in this model and I always enjoy sketching the front grills on cars like these especially with the large headlights and horns.</div>
